Injectable Calcium Hydroxyapatite( "Radiance") in Soft Tissue Augmentation: One Year Experience

Miles H. Graivier, MD and David A. Jansen, MD.

Purpose: Injectible calcium hydroxylapatite (Radiance)has now been used for over one year in our centers for soft tissue augmentation. We will present our experience with more than 200 patients (longest follow up 14 months). While this is presently an off-label use for injectible calcium hydroxylapatite, the implant has FDA approval for vocal cord augmentation and as a soft tissue marker. We will review the areas of use, persistence of correction, patient satisfaction, complications, and treatment of these complications.

Materials and Methods: Beginning in August 2002, over 200 patients have had injectible calcium hydroxylapatite used as a soft tissue implant. Areas of use have included the nasolabial folds, lips, radial lip lines, corners of the mouth, marionette lines, acne scars, HIV related facial atrophy, glabellar lines, chin and cheek augmentation, and others. The patients have been evaluated with regular follow-up visits and serial photography. Development of complications and efficacy of treatment is evaluated. The patients have also answered questionaires regarding their results and level of satisfaction with this implant material.
